[This was actually written last Thursday night, but we removed it in case it ruined the stagette party surprise. Now that the party is in the past, I can re-post it.]
Here I sit, amongst three women: my wife, her mother, and a very good friend.
Discussing yet another female friend’s stagette party the subject of male strippers comes up. Naturally. They’re sitting there thinking that, if they don’t take this opportunity to see a male stripper, when will they get another chance?
All three women. Never seen a male stripper.
And me. The one man in the room.
I’ve seen a male stripper. Not even just one. A whole show of them, in fact.
What’s wrong with this picture?

Do I really need to say anything else? No.
I have only to ask: did you get yours?
Permalink | 2 CommentsSo, today I went off to print some laser-proofs of an invitation. I didn’t want to just print them myself, since we’d be able to use a different, heavier stock going through this particular shop’s printer down the hill.
There is only one Mac in this shop, and it’s in pretty rough shape. There were font problems, printer description problems, Illustrator problems, QuarkXPress problems.
Problems.
In order to print my invitation file I needed to fix one of the problems. I did this while the owner was watching, and was aware of what I was doing and that I couldn’t possibly print from QuarkXPress before fixing it. The font problems didn’t really affect me, so I wasn’t going to worry about them. But she asked, since I’m fairly knowledgeable with Macs, if I could do something about it. Being the kind, generous, Mac-loving person I am I agreed. I think that it’s shameful that a shop that allows you to rent the use of a computer should let that computer fall into operational disrepair. And I was glad that I could, in some small way, help.
Life went on, and I printed my proof. Twice, as it turned out, since the first one wasn’t really what I was hoping for.
Once the two prints were done I took them up to the front counter to pay for them.
What I had expected to pay:
- a RIP fee for processing the file
- two 11 x 17 prints
- two pieces of 100 lb coated cover stock
A second RIP fee wouldn’t have been surprising, since I made a change to the file and sent it again. Were I to do that to someone, I’d've warned them first. But this is not unreasonable.
I was, in fact, charged this second RIP fee. And everything else above.
And I was charged for the minimum 15 minutes of computer time.
This establishment doesn’t charge time to just run prints (if you do them yourself). And while I didn’t really think that I would get a discount for my help — both so that I could run the print in the first place, and because she asked(!) — I think that charging me for the time is uncalled for and unfair.
The thing that really burns me, though, is that I’ll have to go back. They have the best printer in the neighbourhood for printing colour on cover stock. So she has really got me.
But I’m not convinced that her parents were ever married!
